Create detailed 3D creatures, characters, monsters, and imaginative forms from the ground up.
In this hands-on class, students will learn how to shape and refine original 3D creations using Blender and Autodesk Maya (free educational version through accredited school). The focus is on digital sculpting, organic form, visual detail, and creative design for games, movies, animation, collectibles, and 3D printing.
Students will begin with a basic concept, then develop their ideas into fully realized 3D models. They will learn how to create convincing shapes, facial features, clothing, armor, horns, wings, mechanical details, and other custom elements while exploring the difference between realistic and stylized design.
Topics include:
-Creature and character concept development
-Digital sculpting fundamentals
-Organic modeling in Blender and Maya
-Shape, proportion, silhouette, and visual balance
-Creating faces, heads, bodies, hands, and detailed features
-Designing monsters, animals, aliens, robots, and fantasy creatures
-Clothing, armor, accessories, horns, wings, and surface detail
-Realistic versus stylized design
-Refining forms and adding fine detail
-Preparing models for rendering and presentation
-Introduction to preparing models for 3D printing
By the end of the class, students will have created a highly detailed original 3D sculpt and gained practical experience with techniques used in character design, creature development, digital art, game production, animation, and 3D printing.
