UPDATE 2021-06-30: CHANGE OF MEETING SCHEDULE CLASS WILL MEET ON MON & FRI, 4PM - 6PM Field trip dates TBD ====================== This course is filled. email education@PVNet.com to be placed on a cancellation list. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: PVNet is A Nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization and program fees are subsidized UPDATED INFORMATION ================= - Change of meeting days: classes will be held on Mon & Fri. No change to class meeting time - First class starts July 9 - 2 additional class meetings will be added before Aug. 12 , most likely on Saturdays. - Field trip dates are to be determined after the first class meeting. ...end of update... ================= Announcement: PVNet has acquired a state of the art DNA Sequencer. This exciting summer class will utilize PVNet's new DNA sequencer. Join a small group of students and conduct field research on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Students will collect and sequence DNA from organisms and organic matter in order to select samples from which to identify to the species level. Are there unknown life forms on the Peninsula? FACT: "The Palos Verdes Peninsula is one of the worlds richest areas for Pleistocene fossil marine invertebrates." This is an opportunity to search for unknown lifeforms on the peninsula! Also, potentially sequence a previously un-sequenced organism THIS COURSE IS HANDS ON: ==================== Students will Find marine samples for sequencing during a peninsula field trip Sequence samples using our brand new DNA sequencer DNA Extraction DNA Analysis Using PCR Gel Electrophoresis Identify Organisms Based On Their Nucleotides Transformation Basic pipetting, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gene editing (CRISPR), and ELISA are just a few of the techniques included The curriculum will be supplemented with topics from AP Biology and current events like the Covid-19 epidemic, hands-on experiences in the design and fabrication of custom scientific devices, bioamplifiers, and marine science. This class will, as a group, select an organism and sequence it's DNA Each student will build their own electrophoresis chamber The field of biotechnology uses biological systems to produce useful products or perform specialized tasks. This course will provide a solid foundation for any biology class students may take in the future. This class is open to: ==================== 10th - 12th grade students Exceptions considered upon request Excellent for college students & adults CLASS CREDIT ============= Students taking this course will receive a 5 unit WASC accredited certificate for an elective course that is accepted by colleges. Colleges will add the grade for this course to the student's GPA, TOTAL CLASS FEE: $2200 SAVE $100 by paying the entire fee in cash when registering. Note: A significant portion of the course fee results from the cost of the DNA Sequencing equipment and consumable materials.is REMOTE OR IN PERSON - CDC GUIDE LINES ============================= This class is taught in person. We reserve the right to change if necessary to comply with CDC guidelines. ABOUT THIS COURSE ================== UNITS: 5 Elective WASC Accredited Scheduled hours: 35 hrs. SCHEDULE ================== Monday & Friday Time: 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm BENEFITS ================== - Small class size = more attention - Supercharge your college application - Enhanced experience - Opportunities for professional development - Students may improve their GPA by taking this class prior to taking it at their school or in college. - Excellent for improving job opportunities QUESTIONS? =========== Please submit your questions by email to: Education@PVNet.com Absolutely NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES, By registering for the class, you agree to PVNet's terms and policies. CONSUMABLES FOR THIS COURSE ARE INCLUDED PVNet is providing the consumables for this course which are very expensive. Students are encouraged to run additional tests to personal projects during this course by paying for the materials required by the DNA sequencer. Nanopore pricing for the consumables is approx $1,100 which supports running 1 DNA sequence. HUGE DISCOUNT FOR SERIOUS STUDENTS ============================= Are you serious about learning and gaining more experience in this field? Students registered for this course will receive $1000 off the registration fee for the Science & Engineering Fair Project Development Internship for 2022 competition. FIELD RESEARCH ============================= Students will meet off site 2 times to conduct field research totaling approx. 8 hrs. and PVNet will provide them.
