In this class we will use a technique called DNA barcoding to identify organisms and try to determine their position in the tree of life. Do you want to discover a new species? In this class, students will select an organism, isolate its DNA, and prepare a unique sample for DNA sequencing. Sequenced DNA, known by taxonomists as DNA Barcodes, lie at the heart of The International Barcode of Life’s effort to identify every multicellular organism on planet Earth (see: ibol.org). In addition to their role in describing biodiversity, barcodes are used to identify pathogens (e.g. the virus that causes COVID 19), authenticate natural health products, and determine what kind of meat is REALLY in that Chicken Nugget!
