  • filter_dramaClass Description

In this class we will use a technique called DNA barcoding to identify organisms and try to determine their position in the tree of life. Do you want to discover a new species? Perhaps contribute to the study of Global Biodiversity? Well you've come to the right place! In this class, students will select an organism, isolate its DNA, and prepare a unique sample for DNA sequencing. Sequenced DNA, known by taxonomists as DNA Barcodes, lie at the heart of The International Barcode of Life's effort to identify every multicellular organism on planet Earth (see: ibol.org). In addition to their role in describing biodiversity, barcodes are used to identify pathogens (e.g. the virus that causes COVID 19), authenticate natural health products, and determine what kind of meat is REALLY in that Chicken Nugget! This Class Is Hands-On: - Solution Preparation - pH measuring - Sterilization - Micropipetting - Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCRs) - Electrophoretic gels - DNA Sequencing This is a great complement to any high school or introductory college life science course. Get experience using real lab equipment including micropipettes, scales, centrifuges, heat blocks, vortexers, and thermocylers. No molecular biology experience necessary! FEES & DISCOUNTS: ================= *All class materials included. *Save $50 with full cash payments! *Current PVNet interns receive a $50 discount! *OPTIONAL: Add $400 for a 5-unit WASC High School certificate THIS CLASS IS OPEN TO: ==================== 10th - 12th grade students Exceptions considered upon request BENEFITS: =========== - Small class size = more attention - Supercharge your college application - Enhanced experience - Opportunities for professional development - Students may improve their GPA by taking this class prior to taking it at their school or in college. - Excellent for improving job opportunities Please note, no refunds or exchanges.
