================================ UPDATE: Good News! This class has been extended 2 weeks and we've added more STEM training during 6 of the classes with more instructors at no additional cost to students.. This will allow for the course instructor's short summer travel. More details regarding the what will be covered will be provided after Tuesday 6/21. Please rest assured that the course subject matter will be offered in it's entirety plus additional learning opportunities. Thank you very much and best regards, PVNet ================================ Note: This class is designed to be safe and there is no risk to participants. There are over 10,000 known near earth asteroids. This hands on class explores 1 of the methods called ablation which NASA & the U.S. Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO) would consider using to redirect an asteroid to avoid a collision with earth. Asteroid laser ablation is a proposed method for deflecting asteroids, involving the use of a laser array to alter the orbit of an asteroid. Laser ablation works by heating up a substance enough to allow gaseous material to eject, either through sublimation (solid to gas) or vaporization (liquid to gas). At PVNet we have a workshop to develop a system to track and target a balloon. In this workshop we will develop a system using a mini computer, and optical tracking of a moving object for the system to target.
